This past week, Washington Graphics LLC printed and installed large-format wall graphics for Emerald City Harley Davidson in Lynnwood, WA.
Harley Davidson is as much of an American classic as apple pie. Founded in 1903, Harley has been producing motorcycles for over 100 years and was one of only two major American motorcycle producers to survive the Great Depression. The company specializes in heavyweight motorcycles that are built for highway cruising. Harley is also especially renowned for their tradition of heavy customization which eventually lead to the “chopper” style of motorcycle.
Harley’s name alone is so powerful that their products could almost be considered a bonus! In fact, licensing of the Harley Davidson brand and logo accounted for more than $40 million of the company’s net revenue in 2010!
So how does a company become such an icon? Well, it all started back in 1901 when 22-year-old William S. Harley concocted a plan to put a small engine on the back of a bicycle. With the help of his friend Arthur Davidson and Arthur’s brother, they spent the next two years working on their motor-bicycle. Finally, in 1903, it was completed, and the boys were happy to find that the bike could conquer Milwaukee’s small hills without pedal assistance.
After their success, work immediately began on a new and improved version, and by 1906, Harley and the Davidson brothers built their first factory on Chestnut Street. This historic location still serves as Harley Davidson’s corporate headquarters today!
As the years went by, production numbers soared. In 1908, they produced 450 motorcycles. By 1909, their numbers skyrocketed to 1,149, and by 1914, production swelled to 16,284 machines!
From their humble beginnings, Harley Davidson has come a long way to become the most famous name in the motorcycle world. Washington Graphics LLC has been a long-time, proud partner of Harley Davidson throughout the greater Seattle area.
The signs shown in the pictures range in sizes from 48″ x 77″ to 48″ x 54″. The graphics produced are imaged with our Mimaki Inkjet on a pressure sensitive vinyl with an overlaminate that was then mounted to black gator board. Because of the store’s proximity to the Boeing plant in Everett, WA, the manager decided that the graphic should reflect Harley Davidson’s connections to airplanes throughout the years, as you can see from the photos.
