This past week, Washington Graphics LLC teamed up with Carhartt to create the most memorable, unique grand opening Seattle has ever seen! Instead of the classic ribbon-cutting ceremony, Carhartt wanted a more down-and-dirty way to kick off the grand opening in their prime, downtown Seattle retail location.
A large-format, 72″ x 96″ vinyl graphic was applied to a piece of drywall, as you can see from the picture below. The stand-alone wall was then placed in the entryway to the store at the start of the event and sledgehammered by Seattle’s own Edgar Martínez as well as Carhartt’s CEO.
This upbeat event was well-attended by Carhartt and Seattle Mariners fans alike! Local radio stations were also in attendance along with many Carhartt executives and a Seattle councilman.
Carhartt was founded in 1889 and is headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan. It is still a family-operated company, owned by the descendants of Carhartt’s founder Hamilton Carhartt. The company is best known for its line of work clothes, including jackets, coats, overalls, coveralls, and dungarees.
Originally, Carhartt gained popularity as a producer of clothing for railroad workers. In the 1890s, the company focused on creating durable and long-lasting work overalls. Over the years, Carhartt began to create trademark features intended to increase the durability of their clothing such as using heavy duty threads, reinforcing rivets at stress points, and utilizing materials resistant to flame, abrasion, and water.
Today, Carhartt’s merchandise is widely used on farms, construction sites, and ranches. Furthermore, in 2007, the retailer released a women’s line of working clothing for the fall season. In the United States, Carhartt sponsors a number of events such as 4H and rodeos. Most notably, after 9/11, the company decided to donate thousands of bib overalls for rescue crews on the scene.
